Meet Conan Cao, a passionate Ohio State alumnus (’20 economics, and public management, leadership and policy) dedicated to public service. Cao currently serves as deputy secretary general at Love Save Pneumoconiosis, a non-profit organization based in Beijing dedicated to helping the more than 6 million migrant workers who are suffering from this debilitating respiratory disease in China.
What piqued his interest in Ohio State was the variety of choices and flexibility that Ohio State offered. With over 200 majors from which to choose, the university allows students to explore and pursue their own interests and aspirations.
Cao attributes his personal growth to the transformative Buck-I-Serv program, which offers students a weeklong alternative break centered on community service and civic engagement. Buck-I-Serv provided him with invaluable opportunities to volunteer at local non-profit organizations across the United States and around the world. Through these experiences, Cao developed a profound understanding of social issues and the importance of civic engagement, solidifying his commitment to a career in public service.
Inspired by a poignant documentary about pneumoconiosis, he became actively involved with Love Save Pneumoconiosis, dedicating himself alongside his colleagues to providing comprehensive assistance to farmers affected by the disease. Their efforts include frontline relief work, prevention campaigns and impactful policy advocacy.
Cao encourages fellow Buckeyes to explore their passions, dedicating time to truly experience and understand their aspirations before making important career decisions. He strongly believes in the mantra of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, “transforming dreamers into doers,” as he continues to forge a path in public service and make a difference in the lives of others.
The China Gateway supported Cao throughout his four years at Ohio State, providing him with career resources and professional development opportunities. Cao also attended Ohio State's Pre-departure Orientation co-hosted by the China Gateway, the Offices of International Affairs, Student Academic Excellence and Student Life, which eases the transition for new international students, alleviating the stress associated with attending a university abroad for both students and their families.
