Buckeyes Abroad: Lilly Rich

“Going abroad was very important for me because as a pre-med student, I was able to learn about different global health care systems.  This taught me the importance of cultural awareness and being empathetic towards diverse populations.  I knew this program would increase my confidence and independence when it came to international travel,” said Lilly Rich, a neuroscience major who participated in the Across Borders: Healthcare Perspectives and Clinical Shadowing in Greece and North Macedonia program.

On the 15-day program, students visit cities across the two countries such as Skopje, Ohrid and Thessaloniki, where they shadow doctors in the field and engage with current medical students.

“This experience got me very excited about a field in medicine I previously didn’t think I would be interested in.  Not only is my confidence in being a pre-med student increasing, but I now have experiences in the medical field that are broadening my perspective.  The other pre-med students on the trip were also able to give me advice and ideas to make sure this is the right field for me,” shared Rich.

One of Rich’s most impactful experiences of the trip was shadowing a gynecologist, where she gained valuable exposure to international health practices, something that will no doubt aid her in future studies.

“I was fortunate enough to experience a shadowing opportunity where I got to see the day in the life of a gynecologist.  Not only was I able to see multiple procedures and sit in on appointments, but I could compare the doctor’s practices to what I usually see in the United States.”

Outside of the hospitals and clinics, the group got to experience the amazing natural beauty of the region, as well as interact with the local communities through excursions and site visits.

“I discovered that I genuinely enjoy learning through firsthand experiences and not just textbooks. Seeing famous monuments and artifacts in person makes them so much more memorable and personable, which is a great tool for learning.  Lastly, I gained appreciation for lifestyles and viewpoints different from my own.  It is very important to understand that others live differently yet can build thriving and lasting communities,” Rich noted.

Some of Rich’s favorite memories came from Macedonia, where she explored some of the country’s amazing landmarks with the new friends she made on the program.

“Some of the most memorable moments on this trip was exploring the town Ohrid, North Macedonia. The architecture and views of the city were very beautiful!  Another memorable moment was getting to visit the U.S. Embassy in Skopje, North Macedonia. Lastly, some people in our group decided to hike Mount Vodno which gave us an incredible view of Skopje.”
