Santosh Bhandari is an international doctoral student from Nepal in the Department of Plant Pathology. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Agriculture and Forestry University, Nepal and his master's degree from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Santosh took time to share insights into his experience as an international student at Ohio State.

How did you choose Ohio State?

I chose The Ohio State University for its internationally recognized program in plant pathology and its collaborative, interdisciplinary academic environment along with highly reputed faculties in the department. The College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) offers unique opportunities to work across related fields beyond plant pathology, including molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, horticulture and soil science. Additionally, the department’s welcoming culture, strong mentorship and access to cutting-edge research facilities made it the ideal place to pursue my doctoral studies.

While selecting a university, I looked for a program with strong research alignment, a collaborative atmosphere and comprehensive academic support. My process involved reviewing faculty research interests, attending informational sessions and connecting with both alumni and current students. Ohio State stood out not only for its academic excellence but also for its inclusive and supportive community, which I found essential for both personal and professional growth.

What are you researching?

My doctoral research, titled “Decoding Resilience: Unraveling the Secrets of Plant-Microbe Interactions,” focuses on studying the role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in mitigating both abiotic and biotic stresses in plants. I integrate molecular, biochemical, and microbial approaches to better understand these interactions. Additionally, I aim to explore the signaling pathways involved in plant-microbe interactions and identify sustainable strategies to improve crop resilience and disease management.

Which resources have been helpful to your academic career?

Ohio State’s extensive access to academic journals and databases has been essential to my research and coursework. Additionally, the university offers a wide range of professional development workshops, interdisciplinary seminars and research forums that have supported my growth as a scholar. The vibrant campus environment also provides spaces and resources that foster learning, collaboration and exploration.

How are you involved with on campus?

I am involved in the Plant Pathology Graduate Student Association (PPGSA), which provides opportunities to connect with peers and share experiences inside and outside of academia. I was fortunate to serve as the chair of the poster competition for the Plant Sciences Symposium (PSS) 2025 as part of the planning committee 2024/2025. In the upcoming academic year, I will be serving as treasurer for PSS 2026 and social chair for PPGSA, Columbus campus. These roles allow me to contribute to the graduate student community, develop leadership skills and build meaningful academic and social connections across campus.

What is your favorite memory at Ohio State?

My favorite memories at Ohio State combine both academic and cultural experiences. Presenting my research at the CFAES Research Forum, the Plant Sciences Symposium, and the microbiology conference “From Pipettes to Progress” were major highlights. Outside of academics, I truly enjoyed going snow sledding for the first time on campus and celebrating Holi—the festival of colors—with fellow students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Do you have any advice for international students?

I encourage international students to take full advantage of the academic and social resources available at Ohio State. Building connections early, seeking support when needed, and staying open to new experiences can make a meaningful difference in your graduate journey. The supportive and inclusive environment at Ohio State makes it an excellent place to grow both academically and personally.
