This workshop provides an overview of H-1B work visas and employment-based permanent residency pathways for international students and postdoctoral scholars pursuing academic careers in the United States. Participants will learn about eligibility requirements, university sponsorship processes, application timelines and key considerations for transitioning from student status to employment-based immigration options.
H-1B work visa
Topics include:
- Eligibility requirements and key features of H-1B visas, including costs, duration and dual-intent provisions.
- The H-1B sponsorship process and timeline, including prevailing wage determinations, labor condition applications and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services filings.
- Considerations for students transitioning from Optional Practical Training (OPT) to H-1B status after graduation.
Employment-based permanent residency
Topics include:
- Permanent residency sponsorship at Ohio State and other higher education institutions.
- The three primary stages of most employment-based permanent residency cases: labor certification, Form I-140 and Form I-485.
- Common employment-based immigrant categories, including EB-1 and EB-2.
- Typical timelines and planning considerations.
