Join the Center for Latin American Studies, Columbus State Community College, The City University of New York, and the Spanish and Portuguese Club for the third screening of the 2024 Latin American Film Festival. This year's theme is Liberation.
The third film, Miriam Lies (Miriam Mente; Dominican Republic, 2018), centers on a quinceañera celebration and shows how racial prejudices affect a teenage girl’s choices. The product of a short, troubled mixed-race marriage, Miriam is often made to feel like an outcast within her own working-class family for being darker than the rest, leading her to find comfort in an online relationship with sympathetic suitor, and potential quinceañera date, Jean-Louis. Register to stream the film from September 11 through September 18.
Following the screening of the film, please join Dr. Fernanda Díaz-Basteris, Assistant Professor of Latinx New Media and Ethnic Studies at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Dr. Guisela Latorre, Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality, for a discussion and Q&A about the movie.
