Take a deep dive into Venice, Italy with the History of Art department. Venice's precarious habitat has influenced production of unique forms of art, architecture, civil engineering, politics, government and culture over the last 1500 years. The physical and cultural landscapes of Venice are the result of this dynamic collaboration between people and the natural world. There are three major subsections, or themes: Venice Past: art, architecture and engineering of the Byzantine through Baroque periods (500-1800 BCE); Venice Present: Venice as the center of the art world from the “Grand Tour” in the 19th century to the current Venice Biennale; and Venice Future: how climate change and overtourism affect the natural environment and cultural heritage preservation.
