Description

England: Evolution in Darwin’s World and Ours introduces students to the history of evolutionary thought within the context of 19th century Victorian culture.  Students discuss the nature of scientific inquiry and pre-Darwinian ideas, the development of Darwin’s theory and Alfred Russel Wallace’s role, and the reception of the Origin of Species. The many ways in which evolutionary theory relates to our everyday lives are also discussed.  While in England, students receive guided tours of the British Museum, Linnaean Society of London, Westminster Abbey, Natural History Museum (London) and Cambridge University, where Darwin received his baccalaureate degree. Students also tour Down House, where Darwin resided with his wife and children, conducting experiments, and authoring his many books. Students also enjoy visiting London landmarks such as the West End, the Globe Theater, and the Tower of London!
