Fulbright Fellow attends Moritz College of Law

Vlera Rexha, a graduate student in the Moritz College of Law, is from Kosovo.

Fulbright Fellow Vlera Rexha, a graduate student in the Moritz College of Law, aims to use her degree to create positive and progressive improvements in her home country of Kosovo, one of the youngest nations in the world.

Rexha will complete her LL.M program this academic year with a concentration on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and return to Kosovo after graduation in May 2022.

She earned her bachelor's degree with a focus on civil law from the University of Prishtina in Kosovo in 2019. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and as a member of the country’s post-war generation and a future professional in the field of law, Rexha hopes to use her expertise to improve the country’s legal system.

Using her knowledge of ADR after completing her degree at Ohio State, Rexha aims to boost its use in legal disputes and improve the court’s efficiency in Kosovo. She believes its legal system could be improved by implementing and popularizing arbitration, mediation and negotiation, as opposed to litigation, which backs up and slows the courts.

Before beginning her Fulbright program, she worked for the non-governmental organization in Prishtina, Balkans Policy Research Group, dealing with Balkan’s policy and legal issues, publishing policy papers and reviewing Kosovo’s constitution and potential amendments. Rexha has previously worked as a legal intern in the civil department in the Court of Appeals of Kosovo, and she has professional experience with law firms dealing with commercial and contract law, intellectual property rights, copyright and energy law.

Another goal for Rexha is to see more participation from women in the legal system and in the field of ADR, and potentially to teach future generations what she has learned in her educational and professional experiences.

In 2019, Rexha was part of the team representing the University of Prishtina in the world’s largest competition in international trade and arbitration law, the Willem C. Vis Moot competition in Vienna, Austria. Rexha will also be part of the representative team of Moritz College of Law in the Ninth LL.M. International Commercial and Investment Arbitration Moot Competition that will take place in Washington D.C. in April next year.
