Campbell Awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant

Joe Campbell, lecturer and research associate, School of Environment and Natural Resources, has been selected as a 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Scholar.

As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Campbell will be fostering a partnership between the University of Dodoma (UDOM) and The Ohio State University. The University of Dodoma is located in the capital city of Tanzania.

Campbell will be a part of the faculty in UDOM’s School of Social Sciences, where he will teach community development and rural sociology and will assist UDOM in the creation of a cross-university, interdisciplinary undergraduate program focused around food, health, energy and water. Campbell will also conduct research on the social factors associated with the sustainability of water access projects collaborating with UDOM faculty, staff, students and other governmental and non-governmental partners.

Campbell will also be working to develop the Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community Education Abroad program (ENR 5790.10 and 5797.11) that focuses on applied, service-learning projects in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Through this program, students will contribute to the sustainability of a community’s long-term food, water, energy, and health systems in conjunction with the Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering (CEGE) capstone program. In addition to participating in service in a global context, students will explore the complex challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in rural Tanzania.

This course consists of two primary components, each consisting of three credit hours. First, students will enroll in a pre-travel, Spring Semester course focused on the process of community development in rural Tanzania. Second, students will enroll in three weeks (Summer Term, 4-week Session 1) of field studies focused on applied, service-learning projects in the Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania that contribute to the sustainability of a partnered community’s long-term food, water, energy, and health systems.
