China Gateway Hosts Virtual Pre-Departure Orientation

2019PDOFor the eighth consecutive year, the China Gateway is hosting a pre-departure orientation (PDO) for incoming students from China. This year is the first it will be virtual instead of in-person.

Since 2012, the Office of International Affairs has offered this opportunity for future students and their families to learn more about college life, connect with other Ohio State students and university staff and learn important information before attending classes.

Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway, said that it was important to continue with PDO virtually so new students and their families understand that Ohio State provides a supportive and nurturing environment for its international student population.

“Pre-Departure Orientation significantly benefits students and parents,” You said. “PDO has become a tradition for welcoming Chinese students and families to the Buckeye family, and we wanted to continue this tradition by moving sessions online.”

Divided into two days, one for students and one for parents, PDO covers academic expectations, cultural adjustment, campus involvement, immigration information, dining and transportation. Family sessions include information that better help them understand their student’s future college experience and learn how they can best support their student’s academic pursuits.

Pre-Departure Orientation is a collaboration among the Office of International Affairs, Office of Student Life and Office of Student Enrollment. Visit go.osu.edu/chinapdo to learn more about PDO.
