Jill Clark, associate professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Canada for “Scaling-up food democracy: An analysis of Canadian and U.S. food policy councils.”

During her time in Canada, Clark will be researching at Carleton University to study the role of local, state and provincial food policy councils in a national food policy. Her work will involve engaging with the Canadian Food Governance project team, conducting interviews and drawing cross-country comparisons from the U.K. and Australia.

“Persistent food insecurity, chronic disease and loss of family farms are impacts of the global food system. Food policy councils, as governance structures, address these challenges by evoking the concept of food democracy,” states Clark. “Today there are over 238 U.S. and 42 Canadian food policy councils. With the Canadian government announcing its first-ever national food policy in June and the US starting debates on the omnibus Farm Bill, this is a key moment for this research.”

Along with her work at Ohio State, Clark serves on the advisory board of the National Food Policy Networks, is the founder of the Ohio Food Policy Network, and is a steering committee member of the Franklin County Local Food Council.
