Gil Latz Discusses Global Reach of Ohio State on Voices of Excellence Podcast

Vice Provost Gil LatzGil Latz, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, recently sat down with David Staley, associate professor of history, for a discussion about the role of internationalization and the commitment to global engagement at Ohio State. Their conversation is featured on the "Tomorrow, The World: Vice Provost Gil Latz Describes the Global Reach of The Ohio State University" episode of the "Voices of Excellence" podcast published by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Latz talks about how Ohio State’s international strategy demonstrates “a commitment to global engagement, through research, through instruction, and through service,” and explores the difference between internationalization and globalization as well as how the university is preparing students for their role as global citizens. “The faculty are the main touchstones for those students as they learn…. I'd like to see the university develop many more global themes within its curricular offerings for all of our students…because every student is going to be involved in some activity that relates to another part of the world.”

The conversation further examines how the Office of International Affairs serves various needs for the campus, including support for international students and scholars, managing education abroad opportunities, overseeing international partnerships, area studies centers and the Global One Health initiative. And a segment of the podcast touches on the role of and strategy for Ohio State’s Gateway offices in Shanghai, China; São Paulo, Brazil; and Mumbai, India.

Latz, a professor of geography, also shares insight into his long-standing research interest in Japan's modernization process and the culture of philanthropic traditions, which began to take shape as the result of a year-long study abroad experience in Japan as an undergraduate.
