Executive Dean Janet Box-Steffensmeier and President Aiji Tanaka formalize agreements between Ohio State and Waseda University.

Aiji Tanaka, president of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, visited Ohio State on April 29 to sign renewals of international agreements between the College of Arts and Sciences and Waseda. At the signing ceremony, College of Arts and Sciences Interim Executive Dean Janet Box-Steffensmeier joined Tanaka to formalize the agreements that will now continue through 2024.

The Memorandum of Understanding between Waseda and Ohio State has been in place since 2002 and the Student Exchange Agreement since 2007.

During his time in Columbus, Tanaka, accompanied by his colleague, Yuzo Usami, administrative director for Student Services, International Affairs Division, met with campus leaders, administrators and faculty. In addition to a meeting with President Michael V. Drake, the delegation had productive discussions with senior leadership in the Office of International Affairs, Office of Advancement, Office of Research, The Ohio State University Alumni Association and the Department of Political Science.

A two-time alumnus of Ohio State, Tanaka earned his master’s degree in political science in 1981 and his PhD in political science in 1985. Tanaka was named President of Waseda University in November 2018. He has been a professor in the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda since 1998.
