Second Joint Meeting of Mathematicians between Ohio State and the University of São Paulo (USP)

Meeting of Mathematicians

The Second Joint Meeting of Mathematicians between The Ohio State University and the University of São Paulo (USP) took place on March 12 – 16 at USP.

The purpose of the meeting is to promote a scientific exchange between research groups of both universities. Special attention is given to young researchers, post-docs and graduate students, who are welcome to participate and find out about exciting recent developments in the field of mathematics. The program included special sessions targeted to students, where speakers introduced their fields of expertise and discussed their main areas of focus.

The first conference was May 4 - 8, 2015. Both conferences centered around the general theme of geometry and dynamics.

After the initial Ohio State-USP Math Conference, several collaborative research projects were developed between math faculty at Ohio State and USP, including a successful joint research proposal funded by Ohio State and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in 2015. The principal investigators of the grant are Professor Andrzej Derdzinski (Ohio State) and Professor Paolo Piccione (USP). The second meeting featured some of this collaborative work and included additional Ohio State and USP faculty participants.

“We now expect to have several follow-up faculty visits to Ohio State and USP in the near future, and hopefully a third Ohio State-USP conference sometime soon,” said Luis Casian, PhD, professor and chair of the Ohio State Department of Mathematics. “I also hope that we will have graduate students visit Ohio State and USP like a few years ago, when several undergraduate students from USP visited Ohio State during the summer and participated in the Sampling Advances Mathematics for Minority Students (SAMMS) summer program.”
