Ohio State to host its fifth Pre-Departure Orientation in China

Incoming international students from China admitted for autumn semester, and their parents, have the opportunity to attend Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO), a one-day orientation session offered by Ohio State that will take place in Shanghai and Beijing from June 16-24.

This year marks the program’s fifth PDO, and Ohio State expects close to 400 students and 460 parents to attend the orientation this summer. Ohio State expects 1,130 new Chinese students to begin their studies on main campus autumn semester.

While at PDO, students will be able to meet Ohio State staff and faculty, learn more about Columbus and Ohio State and prepare for the cultural changes they will face. Parents will also attend presentations to better understand their student's future college experience and discover how they can best support their student's academic pursuits.

Forty current Chinese students will volunteer at PDO to welcome the new students and their families, assist with translations and share their own experiences at Ohio State.

Ohio State was one of the first universities in the United States to organize a Pre-Departure Orientation in China, and benefits of the PDO are experienced both by students and parents.

Through PDO, students get an early start on college adjustment by meeting student volunteers and university staff and learning more about the campus and the American college experience. This early connection to the university community helps students feel more confident about attending Ohio State and assures parents on sending their children to study abroad in the United States.

In addition to the orientation, students and families will have the chance to attend one of two alumni receptions, hosted in both Shanghai and Beijing, where they will have the opportunity to meet with Ohio State graduates who live and work in China.

Pre-Departure Orientation is a collaboration among the Office of International Affairs, Office of Student Life and Office of Enrollment Services. Visit go.osu.edu/chinapdo to learn more.
