Associate professor awarded Fulbright Africa Regional Research Program award

Nicole O’Brien, associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine - Pediatrics, is the recipient of a Fulbright Africa Regional Research Program award. O’Brien will be affiliated with the Kinshasa School of Public Health in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she will work on her research titled, “The epidemiology of acute neurologic illness and injury in children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” She will be abroad for her research from September - October in 2015 and 2016.

While in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, O’Brien will work with Congolese colleagues to evaluate the incidence, clinical characteristics, treatment approaches and outcomes of children suffering acute neurological illness or injury in both urban and rural Democratic Republic of the Congo. Improved understanding of these epidemiological characteristics is necessary to allow optimal use of limited resources for the region’s children.

The primary objective of this Fulbright is to promote and communicate new research developments in this vital area. This will help cultivate research collaborations among Congolese scientists and graduate students at The Ohio State University.

Anyone interested in the Fulbright Scholar Program should contact Joanna Kukielka-Blaser.
