Description

The Iberian Studies section of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is partnering with TRECE (Taller de Raza, Etnicidad, y Ciudadanía en España) to host the Race in Iberia Symposium from November 7-9, 2024.

Founded on the premise that racial diversity is a permanent feature of contemporary Spanish society, TRECE is a scholarly network that aims to promote the critical study of race in Spain. This year, the scope of the TRECE symposium will be expanded to include a comparative focus on Spain and Portugal, an effort that seeks to broaden our understanding of racial processes in a larger Iberian context. The three-day event will bring together a diverse cohort of experts dedicated to anti-racist scholarship, pedagogy, art, and activism within and beyond Spain and Portugal. It will also feature keynote speakers including Paloma Chen and Raquel Lima and invited panelists Cristina Roldão and Antumi Toasijé.

CLAS is supporting this initiative because, while the event centers Iberia, the topic of race brings other regions like Latin America into the fold.
