Explore different angles of industrial modernity (heavy industry; manufacturing; robotics and automation; environmental impact and efforts in renaturation) with hands on workshops that explore specific manufacturing processes or approaches. Students will closely observe how specific practices create their own social, cultural and environmental impacts. Over spring break, the course travels internationally to explore the history of manufacturing in Czechia. Highlights include walking tours, museum visits and active sites of manufacturers (the Škoda Auto Plant, Bohemia Crystal Glass Factory, the factory town of Zlín and its shoe manufacturer). As a bonus, this course fulfills GE Theme Lived Environments.
