One Program: Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA). Serves U.S. domestic agenda. One-directional. Strengthen the capability and performance of American education in foreign languages and in area and international studies.

PURPOSE

Research or study to advance graduate studies. Serves cultural diplomacy agenda. Multiple programs: Study or Research, ETA, Arts, National Geographic Digital Storytelling, Fulbright-Clinton, Fulbright Fogarty, mtvU Award.
U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Advanced graduate students who will have achieved doctoral candidacy (ABD status) at the time of award.

ELIGIBILITY

U.S. citizens. Must hold B.A. degree; can be at any stage of a graduate program. ETA, Arts, and Clinton applicants do not need college enrollment.
Worldwide, except Western Europe (unless visited briefly for archival research) Non-Western countries, should have U.S. diplomatic presence.

GEOGRAPHIC AREA

Worldwide. 1-3 countries in same region, if all approve multi-country project. Requirements vary greatly by country.
Most fields but must focus on language and area studies (broadly defined as a comprehensive study of all aspects of society or societies including the study of their history, geography, economy, politics, and languages).

FIELDS

Most fields. Clinical medical research involving patient contact is not permitted.
Six- to 12-months.

FELLOWSHIP LENGTH

Eight- to 12-months.
Must possess a high level of language proficiency. Language reference required for each country of research.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Language proficiency varies by country, but some ability is required for many countries.

Applicants propose budget, specific to project, city, and research needs. Covers expenses for travel, living, research, insurance, dependents (but not travel for dependents).

AMOUNT

Monthly budget varies by country; each determines fixed monthly support. Covers expenses for travel, living, research, insurance, dependents, and tuition/study (if applicable).
Ohio State students must apply though the Office of International Affairs. DDRA Project Director submits Ohio State application package to the U.S. Department of Education using Online G6 e-Application System.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications open mid-March on Embark Fulbright Online Application at us.fulbrightonline.org. Student completes final submission of all materials; Graduate School adds evaluation form.
Annual competition. Students must contact Fulbright-Hays Project Director Joanna Kukielka-Blaser (kukielka-blaser.1@osu.edu) to register interest and discuss the application process.

DEADLINE

Mid-Sept: Ohio State’s deadline for submission of electronic application and materials. 
Late Sept/early Oct: on-campus interviews. 
Mid-Oct: Fulbright final application submission.
