Brazil Gateway Faculty

Students in Brazil for an Education Session

History

The Ohio State University’s history of 50+ years of partnership and strategic engagement with Brazil is rooted in collaborative research and educational cooperation, beginning in the area of agriculture with USP-ESALQ in 1964. Collaborations and partnerships have since grown to include diverse areas of study, ranging from medicine to literature, and institutions throughout Brazil. In 2013, Ohio State partnered with the Research Foundation of the State of São Paulo (FAPESP) to create a $1.4 million FAPESP-OSU research fund to foster collaborative projects between researchers at Ohio State and institutions in the State of São Paulo.

Ohio State has a long history of cooperation with national Brazilian higher education agencies CAPES and CNPq. In 2015, CIC-CAPES held its Biomedical Research Workshop at Ohio State, and the following year, Ohio State’s Office of Research and Brazil Gateway co-hosted FAPESP Week at Ohio State.

The university first partnered with CAPES PrInt (Program for the Internationalization of Higher Education), a $60 million program, in 2020. Currently, six Brazilian universities list Ohio State as a partner, and the Brazil Gateway hosted three CAPES PrInt Workshops with these universities in partnership with the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, the Global One Health initiative and the Center for Latin American Studies to highlight opportunities and existing collaborations.
