Firebaugh Study Abroad Scholarships Awarded

The Office of International Affairs has awarded four undergraduate students the Francille M. Firebaugh study abroad scholarship. Megan Cairns, Lisa Miyake, Jessica Williams and Colin Day, all have been awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Megan Cairns, a sophomore majoring in Arabic and comparative studies. She will travel to Morocco to participate in a study abroad program at the Arabic Language Institute of Fez autumn quarter 2008.

Lisa Miyake, a junior majoring in international studies and French with a minor in Japanese. She will travel to France and participate in the ISA French language, Culture and Civilization study abroad program autumn, winter and spring quarters of the 2008-09 academic year.

Jessica Williams, a sophomore majoring in international studies with a minor in African Studies. She will travel to Uganda and Tanzania and participate in the Development and Sustainability in East Africa study abroad program winter quarter 2009.

Colin Day, a senior majoring in international studies and German with a minor in music. He will travel to Germany and participate in the Bonn University study abroad program august and winter quarters of the 2008-09 academic year.

Scholarships are awarded to full-time students attending The Ohio State University in a degree-granting program. Criteria for consideration include:

  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.00;
  • Admitted into an Ohio State approved quarter/summer-long study abroad program. Short-term programs are not eligible for this scholarship;
  • Preference is given to applicants pursuing a degree (major or minor) in International Studies;
  • Preference also is given to students who can demonstrate financial need.

The Francille M. Firebaugh Study Abroad Scholarship was established February 2, 1990 in honor of Francille M. Firebaugh, Vice Provost Emeritus, International Affairs, and Professor Emeritus, Family Resource Management, in recognition of her years at Ohio State and her commitment to International Studies. The scholarship was established to enhance the educational experience of Ohio State students by providing study abroad scholarships to deserving students who are currently enrolled at The Ohio State University.
