GOHi supports surveillance system in 75 facilities in Ethiopia

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) supports the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to strengthen national COVID-19 and other diseases surveillance capacity in 75 selected facilities in Ethiopia. This is part of the ongoing CDC-IHR project, which is partly funded through the CARES Act, and seeks to strengthen the national surveillance system and create a resilient public health emergency management (PHEM) system in Ethiopia. GOHi provided 75 computers that will be distributed to all facilities to support the surveillance work, data management and implementation of the DHIS-2 system of PHEM data.

GOHi’s past and current activities focus on improving Ethiopia’s capacity to meet the International Health Regulation (IHR) requirements to prevent, detect and respond to major public health problems. As part of the CDC-IHR project, GOHi will deploy 81 surveillance officers and regional coordinators to support the Regional Health Bureaus in COVID-19 and other disease surveillance in partnership with the Ethiopian Government and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Since 2016, GOHi has been collaborating with key partners in Ethiopia on several Global Health Security priorities to address public health emergencies. GOHi will continue working with the CDC, EPHI and other partners on strengthening the surveillance and laboratory capacity of the Ethiopian Public Health System.
