Karandikar Sharvari 10 8 18 e1539792679507Sharvari Karandikar, associate professor in the College of Social Work, took her sabbatical in Mumbia, India, focusing on research projects with the Nirmala Niketan Institute College of Social Work and various nonprofits.

The 2019-2020 academic year has been an exciting year for me completing my sabbatical in Mumbai, India. I started the year by visiting the India Gateway, making connections and understanding the services offered by them. The staff was very helpful in providing contacts and resources.

My sabbatical was focused on multiple research projects and building new connections with nonprofits in the field. My first study was a research on exploring physical, verbal, financial and sexual violence among street connected children in Mumbai. Partnering with the Nirmala Niketan Institute College of Social Work and their students, together we successfully collected data with almost 400 street-connected children across Mumbai.

Ohio State and the Indian Institute of Technology of Bombay (IIT Bombay) brought hundreds of scientists and engineers from the United States and India together for the Indo – U.S. Science and Technology Forum in Mumbai.

The “Frontiers of Excellence in Wide and Ultrawide Bandgap Semiconductors and Electronic Systems” forum facilitated a better understanding and exchange of information about state-of-the-art power devices and power electronic systems, as well as identified challenges and opportunities in the field. Ultimately, the workshop aimed to benefit research, development and deployment of power semiconductor devices and power electronics technologies in the immediate future in both countries.

Two faculty members from each university sat on the forum’s organizing committee: IIT Bombay professors Swaroop Ganguly and Saurabh Lodha, and Ohio State professors Siddharth Rajan and Steven Ringel, who is also the executive director of the Institute for Materials Research.

GlobalGatewayGrantSponsored by the Office of International Affairs Global Gateways, the Ohio State Graduate School and the Council of Graduate Students, the Global Gateways Student Research Abroad Grant encourages and promotes the professional and academic development of graduate student researchers at Ohio State.

The grant provides financial support that allows students to undertake thesis or dissertation research abroad, and thus work toward the completion of their degree. Awardees also will assist the university pursue its strategic international goals by creating and bolstering relations with universities and other institutions across the world. All graduate students conducting such research abroad internationally this summer are encouraged to apply.
