The Brazil Gateway will host its third edition of the CAPES PrInt Workshop. CAPES is a Brazilian government agency that funds research. PrInt is a CAPES program for the internationalization of higher education in Brazil, focusing on graduate education. In 2018, 36 Brazilian were awarded grants totaling $60 million over a five-year period to foster reciprocal academic and research opportunities for graduate students and faculty in Brazil and their international partners. Ohio State partners with six Brazilian universities as part of the CAPES-PrInt program.

In previous editions of this event, Brazilian partner universities gave presentations on opportunities through CAPES PrInt for Brazilians at Ohio State and Ohio State faculty in Brazil. In this edition, the Brazil Gateway will focus on Brazilian PhD candidates who completed or are currently working on research at Ohio State as part of the existing academic collaborations with CAPES PrInt funding.

In addition to financial support for Brazilian PhD candidates abroad, CAPES PrInt also funds faculty research networks, short-term research/teaching opportunities in Brazil for foreign faculty and short-term missions for Brazilian faculty at foreign universities.

Speakers

Jean Carlos Carniel is PhD candidate at São Paulo State University. His research, “The fantastic and the reading and writing practices in the city: Portuguese writers read Edgar Allan Poe” investigates the relations between the 19th-century fantastic short story and the city. It aims to understand how Poe is mentioned by two Portuguese writers, Teófilo Braga and Pinheiro Chagas. He works with Pedro Pereira, associate professor in the Ohio State Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Mariana Inglez, PhD candidate at the University of São Paulo, works with Barbara Piperata, a professor in the Ohio State Department of Anthropology. Her research, “Now and then: Nutrition transition in Amazon riverine communities,” aims to understand dietary changes in traditional Amazonian communities from a bioanthropological approach.

Gustavo Lorensi is a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. His research, “Simulations of Two-dimensional Multi-region Transport Problems,” is about transport equation and how the Nystrom method with the singularity-subtraction technique to the integral formulation, can be applied when seeking a solution for the two-dimensional case, in a heterogeneous medium, with isotropic scattering and internal source. Lorensi works with Richard Vasques, assistant professor in the Ohio State Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Kilmer Oliveira Soares, PhD candidate at the Federal University of Paraíba, works with Vanessa Hale, an assistant professor in the Ohio State Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. His research project is on the characterization of the intestinal microbiota of Africanized honeybees, as well as the effects of exposure to agrochemicals, such as zinc and tetracycline, on the intestinal microbiota of honeybees through 16S Metagenomics analysis.
