The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) was established in 2003 in response to patients having to use medicines that were ineffective, unsafe, unavailable, unaffordable or had never been developed to treat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). DNDi sought to create a new drug research and development model for these neglected patients – one that prioritizes patients over profits. There are three African regional offices in Nairobi, Kinshasa and Capetown.

DNDi and its partners work on drug discovery, development and delivery of safe, effective and affordable treatments for neglected populations, focusing on gaps in the management of NTDs that fuel cycles of poverty and disease in resource-constrained settings. Its mission is pegged on three pillars: innovation, partnerships & collaboration and advocacy for change.

In this talk, Samuel Kariuki, director, DNDi Eastern Africa, will discuss DNDi’s mission and vision, showcasing the key achievements of delivering 13 new treatments for the six most deadly NTDs in its 20 years of operation. He will also highlight the challenges of climate change and financing models for NTDs and the affected neglected populations.
