“This photograph was taken near Nha Trang, a coastal resort city in southern Vietnam. I traveled with a guide by motor bike about 30 minutes north of the city to an area that was formerly a thriving commercial fishing center. When we arrived in the late afternoon, there were only a few locals fishing, and my prospects for a photograph didn't look promising. Then two fishermen pulled their small basket boats to shore and began unloading their gear and catch for the day. One ran passed me and buried his bait in the sand. My guide approached him and asked if I could take his picture. He beamed with pride. I took several shots of him with his boat and fish. This photograph was my final one. The diffused light created a special glow on his wrinkled, bronzed face that showed the effects of the sun and wind from his life at sea. But it's his eyes and subtle smile that for me covey the satisfaction he felt of a good catch and the joy he derives from his life as a fisherman.”

“A glance up at the Charminar, a historic landmark in Hyderbad, India, through the shops and tents that surround it. At the base of the Minnar (pillar) shown in the photo rests an illegal Hindu temple construction. The Charminar is a site that is surely the product of Mughal and Islamic colonialism but has meaningful history nonetheless. This photo and its intersecting, yet imperfect lines represents the complicated colonial past of India and the divisiveness of its people that continues on.”

“Within a room of stark concrete, a single oculus of light frames a person in a moment of quiet contemplation. This photograph was taken to illuminate the struggle against inner darkness, portraying how one can feel confined within a cage of light and shadow. I aimed to emphasize the striking geometry and the bold contrast of the bright orange shirt, which serves as a beacon of hope in times of desperation and confinement.”

“Located in Budapest on the east bank of the Danube, this building known as "House of the Nation" in Hungarian, was designed by Hungarian architect Imre Steindl, and opened in 1902. His design was chosen due to its strong resemblance to the Palace of Westminster in London, and the desire of the 19th century politicians to reflect their commitment to Western Europe. Its construction includes 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40kg of gold. I was taken by the beauty of this building and the reflections in the water. The photograph was taken during the departure of a Danube river cruise at sunset.”

Two years prior, I took this image during the ofrenda parade in which each neighborhood carries flowers to the Plaza de la Virgen. The long march is filled with as much emotion as tradition. Each Fallera wears traditional dress of elaborately embroidered silk. This image caught a moment of support offered to a fellow Fallera as they pressed onward to the ofrenda.”

All the dancers clearly loved what they were doing, but I was especially captivated by this young couple that was so beautifully adorned and so reflective of the culture of Panama. I spent a wonderful hour enjoying the varied dances and watching the musicians perform the cheerful music. Could have stayed longer but alas, I had to board the ship and sail away. (As an aside, I loved noting that the young woman has braces on her teeth.)"

The work is essentially an open cut-out in the ceiling, and the puddle covered floor is the result of recent rainfall. I was looking at the work with some friends when a group of Japanese students came and sat directly across from us. I thought it was interesting to see school groups visiting a contemporary art museum, one where a lot of the works on display aren't immediately digestible to an audience. “While I was on a tour in Cuba, our group spent a few days in Viñales, which is the heart of the country's tobacco region. We visited an older couple on their small tobacco farm. Their homestead had humble furnishings but was very clean and well organized. While the wife was busy in the kitchen with its wood-fired stove, the husband smoked a cigar and shaped tobacco leaves to roll cigars. When thinking about Cuba, one of the first things that comes to mind for many people is cigars. Tobacco growing and the productions of cigars has been part of the Cuban culture for hundreds of years, starting with the indigenous peoples, and Cubans are proud of this tradition. The texture of the elderly man's hands, the leaf and the cigar tell a story of hard work, craft and time.”
