Gaarder receives Dorothy Brickman Award for Outstanding New Professional

Erik Gaarder, immigration coordinator at the Office of International Affairs received the prestigious Dorothy Brickman Award for Outstanding New Professional at the 2018 NAFSA (Association of International Educators) Regional Conference, which includes of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

The award is presented each year to an individual who has been in international education for less than three years and who has made significant contributions to their office or to the field of international education.

Gaarder has excelled in his current position offering charisma and empathy even in the busiest times of the years.

“Erik has the ability to remain calm and focused on each individual student, regardless of how many people he has already seen or how many people are waiting,” said Program Manager Amanda Yusko.

“He likes to understand his students’ needs and is willing to go above and beyond to provide an excellent student experience,” said Immigration Coordinator Camila LeMaster Esquivel.

Moreover, he has made numerous contributions while at the Office of International Affairs, including establishing many partnerships across campus, serving as the liaison to the American Language Program at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, as well as the Grant Committee Chair.

“As the field of international education is growing increasingly more challenging and capricious, it gives me hope knowing people like Erik will soon be leading the way,” said Yusko. “He is an extraordinary teammate and colleague, a staunch advocate for our students, and genuinely one of the most warmhearted, cheerful and hilarious people I have ever met.”

The Office of International Affairs is proud to have a member recognized at NAFSA for their efforts for the second year in a row.
