Volunteer for the Mandela Washington Fellowship this summer

Mandela Washington Fellow with volunteer In June, Ohio State will host 25 young professionals from across Africa for the Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF), a six-week flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative. The objective of the program is to provide young African leaders with the skills and connections they need to accelerate their career and contribute more robustly to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth and enhancing peace and security in Africa.

Washington Mandela Fellows are men and women between 25 and 35, who have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their respective organizations by being engaged in community development and youth mentorship.

In order to provide the fellows with an authentic and meaningful experience, we invite students, professionals, community leaders and all individuals in Columbus who are passionate about engaging with their local and global communities to volunteer for the program by serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States and Columbus.

Volunteering opportunities include:

  • Welcoming the fellows at the airport and their residence halls upon arrival
  • Attending receptions and social events
  • Sharing knowledge of local sites, food, festivals and other events
  • Connecting fellows with your personal or professional networks
  • Interacting with fellows by taking them to lunch, celebrating important holidays, providing transportation to community events or social outings, and answering questions fellows may have related to Columbus or American culture
  • Providing a homestay experience for the fellows by inviting individuals or groups into their homes for one weekend during the program
  • Exploring the dynamics of building cross-cultural relationships and potentially forging long-term relationships with emerging leaders from other countries
