Accomplishments of 2016 Mandela Washington Fellows

Since their Young African Leaders Institute leadership training at The Ohio State University during the summer of 2016, the Mandela Washington Fellows have continued to advance their causes and been recognized for their accomplishments. Detailed below is a list of the accomplishments.

Development and Service

Tfwala Colisile Hloniphile, Swaziland, established a Youth Chamber of Commerce in Mbabane, Swaziland. She also formed her own mentorship program to work with 12 local students.


Two Mandela Washington Fellows were promoted.

  • Hiji Raphael, Tanzania, was promoted to Research and Planning Manager at the Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.
  • Chukwuemeka Ubaka, Nigeria, was promoted to Head the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at University of Nigeria, Nsukka.


Chukwuemeka Ubaka, Nigeria, collaborated with his mentor from The Ohio State University, Debra Goff on a journal paper. Goff, an associate professor of pharmacy and infectious disease, and Ubka are co-presenting at an international conference in South Africa in 2017.

Grants and Awards

Three Mandela Washington Fellows were awarded grants to continue working in their field of expertise.

  • Emmanuel Odama, Uganda, was awarded a Sall Family Foundation grant for his project to Improvement small-holder Agriculture in West Nile Region.  
  • Enque Endeshaw, Ethiopia, and Bahati Hakimu, Tanzaina, were awarded a State Department Reciprocal Exchange Awards to work with two of their Ohio State mentors.
  • Bahati Hakimu, Tanzaina, was awarded the Government of India Technical and Economic ITEC/SCAAP Scholarship for 2017 academic year. He will attend an eight-week course on innovative leadership for organizational growth and excellence at the National Institute of Entrepreneurship at NOIDA.

Advanced Education

Four Mandela Washington Fellows have applied for PhD programs at universities around the world.

  • Grace Mwashigadi, Kenya, has applied to program in Cananda
  • Frederic Danso, Ghana, has applied to program in China
  • Balarabe Ismail, Nigeria, has applied to program in Australia
  • Anastacia Tomson, South Africa, has applied to program in the United States
