Global Engagement

Ohio State is committed to encouraging cross-cultural interaction and promoting the exchange of ideas as it moves toward becoming a preeminent global university. The Office of International Affairs has developed creative programming to increase opportunities for international students to get involved and facilitate growing relationships between international students and the Ohio State campus community through social, cultural and educational activities.

The Global Engagement team provides opportunities for international and domestic students to experience the diverse culture at Ohio State. Global Engagement has implemented a variety of programs and activities to better promote cross-cultural relationships on campus.

A Global Engagement newsletter is emailed to all interested students on a weekly basis. The newsletter includes information about upcoming Global Engagement Nights, international film series screenings, cultural activities on campus and in Columbus, and resources available to students looking to engage with other Ohio State students. The Office of International Affairs will partner with the Gateway Film Center this summer to host an international film series. All students are encouraged to come view the films and discuss the cultural significance with their peers.

The films will be shown on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Each film will be shown at 7 p.m. and tickets are free with a BuckID.

May 28 - The Intouchables (France 2011)

June 25 - A Royal Affair (Denmark 2012)

July 23 - The Grandmaster (China 2013)

The Office of International Affairs will explore the rich history of Columbus on Wednesday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. during a walking tour through the city with Cap City Tours.

The tour will pass landmarks such as the State Capitol, City Hall and the Scioto River waterfront. There are only 15 spots available, and all students can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis. Please visit 100 Oxley Hall by Monday, May 5 at 4:30 p.m. to sign up for the tour.

Global Leadership Initiative (GLI) is a one-year program designed to foster an intercultural community of leaders who are ready to embrace a global perspective, advocate diversity and make a lasting impact at Ohio State and beyond.

All applicants must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at Ohio State whose degree will not be completed prior to the end of Spring Semester 2015. This year's cohort will be 24 members, including 12 domestic students and 12 international students.

International and domestic students can enter a lottery to join the Office of International Affairs on a trip to Memphis, Tennessee from March 8-11.

The long weekend will include a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum and Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. The trip back to Columbus will include one day stop in Louisville, Kentucky with a visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum or the Muhammad Ali Center.

Interested students should visit 100 Oxley Hall from Monday, February 24 to Wednesday, February 26 to enter the lottery for a spot on the trip. There are 40 spots available, 20 for international students and 20 for domestic students. If you are chosen you will be notified on Thursday, February 27.

Muyao Shen, an international student from China and a Global Ambassador with the Office of International Affairs, recently started a blog to share her perspective on cross-cultural connections on campus, the Global Engagement Night program and life as an international student at Ohio State.

Shen’s recent posts document various Global Engagement Nights hosted at the Office of International Affairs. The weekly program invites international and domestic students to discuss a variety of topics and expand their cross-cultural knowledge and relationships.

The Office oOmarf International Affairs is partnering with the Gateway Film Center for an international film series this semester.  

The next film will be Omar (2013), a Palestinian film nominated for an Oscar in the foreign language film category. The film will be shown Wednesday, February 26, at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Film Center. Come see this nominated film before the Oscars air on March 3. The first 30 students will receive free popcorn and soda. All students can attend the film for free with a valid BuckID.
