Global Engagement

Ohio State is committed to encouraging cross-cultural interaction and promoting the exchange of ideas as it moves toward becoming a preeminent global university. The Office of International Affairs has developed creative programming to increase opportunities for international students to get involved and facilitate growing relationships between international students and the Ohio State campus community through social, cultural and educational activities.

The Global Engagement team provides opportunities for international and domestic students to experience the diverse culture at Ohio State. Global Engagement has implemented a variety of programs and activities to better promote cross-cultural relationships on campus.

A Global Engagement newsletter is emailed to all interested students on a weekly basis. The newsletter includes information about upcoming Global Engagement Nights, international film series screenings, cultural activities on campus and in Columbus, and resources available to students looking to engage with other Ohio State students. The Office of International Affairs is continuing its collaboration with the Gateway Film Center by co-hosting an international film series which offers a monthly international film for students to view for free.

November's screening will be Iranian film "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night." The film tells the story of an Iranian town where the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire. The film is free to students with a BuckID, and admission is open to the public at regular ticket price.

November's film will be Wednesday, November 26 at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Film Center. Each film in the series is shown at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The first 50 students to arrive will receive free popcorn and soda.

 

Experience the shopping frenzy of Black Friday this Thanksgiving Break. The Black Friday Shopping Tour, hosted by the Chinese Students and Scholars Society and the Office of International Affairs, will take students to Tanger Outlets in Jeffersonville, Ohio on Friday, November 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transportation to the mall will be provided for free, and all participants will receive exclusive deals including a gift card and a gift bag featuring samples and promotions.

Spaces are currently full and students will soon receive an email telling them if they have reserved a seat. All students who register must attend an information session, which will be held on November 17-19 at 7 p.m., location to be announced.

October's screening will be French film "Persepolis" Based on an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, the film tells the coming-of-age story of a young Iranian girl during the Islamic Revolution. The film is free to students with a BuckID. The films are open to the public at regular admission price.

Join the Office of International Affairs for a trip to the annual Circleville Pumpkin Show on Wednesday, October 15. The festival will include pumpkin sculpting demonstrations, live musical performances, tasty pumpkin treats and award winning pumpkins weighing over 1,000 pounds.

All students are welcome to sign up for the trip at 100 Oxley Hall. The first 40 students to sign up will attend, and other students will be able to put their names on a waiting list.

Students who attend should meet the group at the Ohio Union South Loop at 4 p.m. to take the bus to Circleville, OH. All transportation will be free, but students will be responsible for the cost of any items purchased at the festival.

The Office of International Affairs will continue its partnership with the Gateway Film Center this semester with the Global Engagement Film Series. The series promotes international cinema with a different screening on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

The selected films offer new cultural perspectives, and provide an opportunity to support films from around the world. Students can attend the films for free, and often guest speakers are invited to participate in a Q&A session following the film.

September's screening will be "Finding Fela," a Sundance Film Festival selection which depicts the life of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti.

October's screening will be the Oscar-nominated French film "Persepolis." The film tells a coming-of-age story of a young Iranian girl during the Islamic Revolution.

Graduation ReceptionA celebration for international students graduating this semester will occur on Friday, August 8 at 3:30 p.m. in the Ohio Staters, Inc., Traditions Room at the Ohio Union. All international students, along with their family and friends, are invited to attend and be recognized for their tremendous accomplishment.

Graduating students will be introduced at the reception and given the opportunity to share their accomplishments and their future plans after graduation. A photographer from the Office of International Affairs will be taking pictures, but guests are welcome to bring their own camera as well. Graduates are also encouraged to bring their country’s flag to the reception. You can view slideshows of previous graduation receptions here.
