Notice about Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Guidance:

SEVP has not yet issued guidance and FAQs regarding Spring 2021. Therefore, the FAQs below follow the guidance for Autumn 2020. When SEVP issues guidance related to Spring 2021, these FAQs may change. Please continue to check back.

International Student Information

The Office of International Affairs has created answers to frequently asked questions regarding this semester.

Click on Current Students if you are a returning international Ohio State student. Choose New Students, if Spring 2021 will be your first semester at Ohio State.

We will continue to provide updates as new information is issued by the university and the Department of Homeland Security and the Student Exchange Visitor Program.

Other Updates

Limited reopening of the Office of International Affairs (OIA)—The OIA front desk in 140 Enarson Classroom Building is open for international students to pick up and drop off documents from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. All visitors to the front desk must schedule an appointment in advanceOnce inside Enarson, you will enter OIA via the the side door, up the ramp to the right. Please remember that you must wear a mask at all times while in the building.

Students can also utilize the OIA Drop-Off Box located by the office's front doors to drop off documents without scheduling an appointment. Students will be notified when documents are ready for pick up.

I-20s and DS-2019s

Appointments for I-20/DS-2019 pickup will be available Monday – Thursday, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

For all other documents, an immigration coordinator will confirm how you would like to receive them once they have been processed.

Once the document has been processed, you will receive an email from an immigration coordinator with the instructions on how to schedule a pick up appointment. DO NOT SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE HEARD FROM AN IMMIGRATION COORDINATOR THAT YOUR DOCUMENTS ARE READY FOR PICK UP AT OIA.

Employment Verification Letter (EVL)

The only document that international students may drop off in person at this time (again, by appointment only) is the Employment Verification Letter (EVL), needed to apply for a Social Security Number. Appointments for EVL drop-off and pick-up may be scheduled Monday – Thursday, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. EVL pick-up will only be available on Fridays. Schedule an appointment online.

OPT/STEM OPT Extension

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services had published a final fee rule on August 3, 2020 that was to become effective 60 days later, on October 2, 2020. However, a motion for a preliminary injunction against this new fee rule has been granted and for now the new fees and form versions and other changes associated with the final fee rule that were to be effective on October 2, 2020 are on hold.
Students applying for OPT should include the original $410 filing fee and the use correct version of Form I-765 (dated 08/25/2020) which is found on the USCIS website. Additional questions about Form I-765 and filing fees should be directed to
