Student Enrollment Process

Ohio State students traveling abroad for academic or co-curricular purposes are required to register their travel, which includes enrollment in the university’s supplemental international insurance provided through GeoBlue.

Students traveling on an education abroad program offered through the Office of International Affairs.

Students admitted to and enrolled in one of these types of programs are automatically enrolled in the supplemental insurance and do not need to complete the travel registration process.

Students engaging in academic or co-curricular travel abroad not managed by the Office of International Affairs Education Abroad unit.

Students should complete the international travel registration process, which includes enrollment in the supplemental insurance. Students are encouraged to register well in advance of travel (preferably three weeks or more) to complete the pre-departure materials and access the insurance resources for safe and healthy travel planning. If submitting your travel registration within one week of departure, please contact IRM@osu.edu.

There are four general categories for travel registration:

Ohio State Group Travel – Registration for students participating in group academic or co-curricular international travel not managed by the Office of International Affairs but is coordinated by a department, unit, faculty or staff member. Examples include travel abroad with Buck-I-SERV, SASSO, and the Fisher Summer Global Internships. The Ohio State Group Travel page will include a listing of those groups with active travel registration windows.

Student Organization Group Travel – Registration for students participating in group international travel organized by a registered student organization and not managed by the university. The Student Organization Group Travel page will include a listing of those student organizations that have arranged registration for their group.

Ohio State-Supported Individual Travel – Registration for individually arranged travel supported by the university. Support includes travel funded by a scholarship or grant awarded or disbursed through the university. It also includes individual experiences that will fulfill an Ohio State degree requirement (e.g. practicum, field experience or internship), experiential credit requirement or receive Ohio State course credit (e.g. has an Ohio State course number).

Individual Travel – Registration for students participating in individual academic or co-curricular international travel that is not sponsored, managed or supported (see above) by the university.

Please visit the Register Other Travel site and select the category which best fits your upcoming international travel experience to access the appropriate travel registration. If you do not have an active Ohio State username and password, please contact IRM@osu.edu for assistance in creating a travel registration.

Faculty and Staff Enrollment Process

Faculty and staff traveling abroad as leaders of student programming should also enroll in the supplemental insurance. The insurance includes coverage and benefits in addition to what is provided under the university benefits plan.

Are you traveling as a resident director or leader of an education abroad program managed by the Office of International Affairs?

If you are a resident director or leader of an education abroad program offered through the Office of International Affairs, the insurance is included in the program budget and your enrollment materials will be prompted by the OIA education abroad specialist for the program.

Are you traveling as a leader of a group or cohort of students that is not an education abroad program managed by the Office of International Affairs?

If you are traveling as the leader or facilitator of academic or co-curricular travel abroad not managed by the Office of International Affairs, please contact IRM@osu.edu to establish an Ohio State Group Travel registration. This will queue travel registration and insurance enrollment for students, faculty and staff traveling with the group. In the event that a university department will pay for your insurance premium, please provide a department contact person and an erequest number.

Are you traveling abroad to coordinate a current or future education abroad program?

Faculty and staff traveling abroad without students to plan future student programming abroad are eligible to enroll in the supplemental insurance. Please contact IRM@osu.edu to establish a registration for insurance enrollment.

Are you traveling abroad for university business or personal travel?

Faculty and staff traveling abroad for university business not related to education abroad programming or for personal travel are not eligible for enrollment in the supplemental insurance. Please consult the Ohio State Travel Assistance page for access to health resources when traveling abroad.
