Update on Protests in Nicaragua

April 23, 2018 - Ohio State has been monitoring this weekend’s protests in Nicaragua. Ohio State has no known student travelers with current itineraries in Nicaragua. Currently, no firm decisions have been made concerning upcoming summer programming in Nicaragua. Although there are no reports of U.S. citizens being directly impacted by the violence, the U.S. Department of State did issue a series of security messages and elevated their advice for Nicaragua from a Level 2 to Level 3 Travel Advisory. While this change does not automatically lead to changes or curtailment in travel, it does prompt active and deliberate review of the travel. Ohio State remains in active communication with the Overseas Security Advisory Council (U.S. Department of State), Drum Cussac (the provider of our security coverage) and contacts on the ground in Nicaragua concerning the impact of the protests on locations where Ohio State programming is planned to occur.

We are in communication with the faculty and staff program leaders and those students planning to travel concerning the review of travel. We will continue to monitor the situation through professional resources, local contacts and local media to determine if changes to programming or curtailment of travel is prudent.
