What is the issue or problem addresses in your research?

Citric acid (CA) is an organic acid naturally present in all aerobic organisms. It has various uses in many industries. The annual production is 1.6 MT with an annual growth rate of 3.5-4%. But The natural supply of citric acid is very limited for industrial demand. Thus, increasing demand can be only accomplished via biotechnological processes with cheap methods. So, this study uses biotechnological process for producing citric acid by microbial isolate from sugar cane molasses as a cheap waste.

What methodology did you use in your research?

Forty-seven sources of samples were collected from different localities in Egypt to get citric acid producers of microorganisms using two types of media supplemented with bromocresol green as acid indicator and then tested quantitativly. The most potent isolates identified morphologically and genetically. Then the research studyed different factors affected on CA production by submerged fermentation. Finally, we used the factors results in statistical model to enhance the production.

What are the purpose/rationale and implications of your research?

The main purpose of the study is producing CA in a cheap way using microorganisms. So, It's large survey was made to achieve the challenge to get an isolates can degrade sugar cane molasses and produce CA. After that, one isolate achieved that, so identified morphologically and genetically. It is the first time use this isolate for CA production, so that the best affecting factors which affecting on CA production was studied plus used statistical model to maximize the CA production amount.
