Photographs in the exhibition were first submitted in three categories to the International Photography Competition, an annual contest open to all members of the Ohio State community. More than 200 members of the campus community (8 faculty members, 13 staff, 16 visiting scholars, 24 alumni, 50 graduate students and 108 undergraduate students) submitted more than 400 photographs across three categories: People, Places and Buckeye Pride Worldwide. The Places category had the most total submissions with 197 photos entered. 153 photographs were submitted in the People category and 58 images in the Buckeye Pride Worldwide category.

A three-member judging panel reviewed all entries in the competition on the basis of artistic expression, creativity, originality, and quality of image. The judges honored one selection with the overall Best in Show award and selected first, second, and third place winners in each category. The judges also awarded honorable mention recognition to 30 photographs.

The 40 images selected for the exhibit were entered into an online People’s Choice vote through the Office of International Affairs Facebook page. More than 4,300 votes were cast and People’s Choice winners were chosen by the public in each category. Graduate student George Vaughn won People’s Choice - Places for his image taken in Germany, “Spiritual Breakthrough.” Undergraduate student Riley Dunbar’s photo from Venice, “A Woman Walking Her Dog” won the People’s Choice – People award.
