In the artist’s own words: “This is Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Isfahan, Iran. To me, it is a constant reminder that we need to end all forms of discrimination, particularly discrimination based on gender. Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, which was built in the 17th century, is different from any historic mosque in Iran in two ways: it was built exclusively for women, and it has a gray dome instead of a turquoise dome. In the 17th century, it was colored unconventionally to signify its purpose but in the 21st century its color reminds me that gender inequality and discrimination belongs to the 17th century.”
