In the artist’s own words: “This photo was taken after a long walk along the dry bed of Piccanniny Creek, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, as I was traveling through the country one last time before moving to the United States. As I sat on a rock by Black Rock Pool, I noticed a goanna who seemed, like me, to acknowledge the water just being there - it is so scarce in this area during the dry season. There was silence, stillness in the air, nobody else around. I like this picture because it encapsulates what I remember of this part of Australia: red earth, precious water, light as bright as it gets and a space conducive to feeling rather than thinking: a full silence, an animate stillness.”
