In the photographer's words: "During the month of January, the mangos in the northern region of Malawi ripen. During this time, little legs can be seen dangling from trees as the kids pick mangos and drop them down to their friends waiting exitedly below. The hospitals also see a steep rise in orthopedic injuries from kids that fell while picking mangos. The doctors group the injuries together and label them "Mango Syndrome." This child was picking a mango for her little sister when she fell. I got to know this brave girl over the week that she spent in the hospital while we waited for the swelling to go down. She was very brave while we reset the fracture even though we weren't able to give her pain medicine due to a shortage. This picture was taken the day that she walked 5 miles back to the hospital with her mother to have the cast removed...still no fear in her eyes."
