In the photographer's words: "This picture was taken at a merchant's market in Madrid where Middle Eastern immigrants go to sell their goods. Although the market, or el Rastro, as it is called in Spanish, takes place in Madrid, you do not feel like you are in Spain. When you walk up the crowded alleyways, as vendors scream out prices and tempt people into buying their art, you feel as if you were standing in the middle of Morocco. This picture depicts just a tiny portion of the shoes and other pieces of Middle Eastern fashion that take over the streets on Sunday mornings. The colors used in the clothes are absolutely astounding. As an artist, I look for colors such as these that provoke happiness. When I see these shoes I picture myself wearing them, running down the street, and sparks of color flying out from under the shoes. I love the way that the Spanish art and culture is shaped by the Middle East. These shoes are actually worn by Spanish girls when they go out to the movies, go to class, or just go out for an evening walk."
