In the artist's own words: “This photo was taken in a traditional Himba community in Namibia. This Himba woman is unmarried but a prospective bride, as signifed by her large, stiff necklace. I found myself fascinated with the complicated and time consuming beauty rituals Himba women perform, one of which is covering the hair and body with a mixture of milk fat and ochre (a type of dried clay) to attain the unique hairstyle and reddish skin tone by which they are often distinguished. I found her to be an excellent example of how the Himba people value a beauty much different than our own, but she is, at the same time, awe strikingly lovely.”
