Negga Asamene is a researcher at the Division of Bacteriology, Parasitology and Zoonosis at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. He is currently a PhD Fellow at Addis Ababa University.
As a PhD student and fellow of the Ohio State TARTARE project, Asamene is pursuing his interest in the research of foodborne pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in food value chains of Ethiopia. Asamene hopes to uncover evidence capable of helping tackle foodborne illnesses in Ethiopia.
His PhD dissertation research, “Bacteriological quality, Phenotypic and molecular characterization of non-typhoidal Salmonella, diarrheagenic 0157:H7 and generic E. coli of raw beef in Addis Ababa.” project is funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom (FCDO).
The project aims to develop and implement a risk-based framework for food safety management and resource allocation with the goal of reducing foodborne illnesses and deaths and increasing equitable consumption of a safe, affordable and nutritious diet.
