Hedgecoth awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award

David Hedgecoth, assistant professor in the School of Music, has been awarded a prestigious 2020-2021 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Brazil during May – September 2021.

Hedgecoth will research “Sounds of Bahia: The People of Neojiba” at Instituto Clara Ramos, an educational organization specializing in cultural exchange between the United States and Brazil. He first learned about the Instituto Clara Ramos while he was a resident director for The Brazilian Experience: Surveying Brazilian Culture Through Music and Education study abroad program.

“One of the largest and most successful social and cultural programs in the State of Bahia, Brazil, Neojiba has been a hub of artistic and educational opportunity for Bahian adolescents for over a decade,” Hedgecoth said. “Through field work, observation and interviewing, I will gain insight into the organization’s governance, pedagogy, culture and impact.”

Hedgecoth said he will craft a manuscript narrating the human elements of the organization and collected data will inform education advocates in the U.S. and Brazil about new types of outreach, curriculum and pedagogical practices.
