Wrapping up 2019

What an amazing year for Ohio State in Brazil! Jane K. Aparecido assumed the director position in February and presented to the Global Gateway’s Board of Directors in March, along with the directors of the China and India Gateways, to showcase the success stories of these important Ohio State presences abroad.

For the first time, the Gateways collaborated to host a business panel on emerging markets on campus, which took place on March 20. In April, we attended FAUBAI, a big conference on higher education internationalization in Brazil and also met with alumni and partners who could be interested in offering internships for Buckeyes in Brazil.

In May, Brazilian companies welcomed three Fisher MBA Global Applied Projects teams. In addition, six other education abroad programs brought students to Brazil throughout the year.

During our second visit to campus in September, we hosted a networking and social hour on campus in collaboration with BRASA (Brazilian Students Association) and the Greater Columbus Sister Cities International – Curitiba Committee, after all, more than 40 Brazilians study on campus, along with many Brazilian visiting scholars. There was also a reception for faculty and staff interested in engaging with the Gateways.

Following the great success of last year’s first master classes, we hosted another one in October in partnership with the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Law and the Association for the Control of Tobacco. Also in October, we participated in the EducationUSA LL.M fairs in four different cities, attended a webinar with Prodigy Finance; visited several Brazilian high schools to speak with prospective students looking to study at Ohio State and participated in MBA fairs in Peru and Mexico for the first time, in addition to two cities in Brazil—marking our efforts to expand the Brazil Gateway services to other countries in Latin America.

In total, we represented Ohio State at six high school fairs, nine high school visits, one undergraduate and graduate fair, four MBA fairs and four LL.M fairs, reaching out to almost 1,000 prospective students.

In 2019, over 80 Ohio State affiliates received some support from the Brazil Gateway during their engagement with Brazilian collaborators and related grant application, including 60 faculty who visited Brazil to teach, conduct research and attend events.

Research activities within the Brazilian Capes PrInt funding system started strong, with four well- known Brazilian universities naming Ohio State as their United States partner and Ohio State attending the first Capes PrInt Workshop at USP.

In our newsletter, we started sharing special alumni stories as part of Ohio State’s Sesquicentennial celebration of 150 years, of which 55 include Ohio State’s collaborations in Brazil!

Now, we would like to thank our Brazilian and Buckeye community in both Brazil and on campus, alumni, students, faculty, partners and everyone who allowed us the opportunity to represent Ohio State and who are interested in engaging in activities between Ohio State and Brazil. We wish you all happy holidays and a wonderful New Year. Keep following us here, because we have great events and plans in store for 2020!
