Dueñas Awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant

Alcira Dueñas, associate professor of history at The Ohio State University at Newark, is the recipient of a prestigious 2018-2019 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant.

Dueñas will research Making the Spanish Empire of Laws: The Conversion of Indigenous Andeans into Legal Subjects at the Archivo y Biblioteca Nacionales de Bolivia from August 2018 – May 2019.

While in Bolivia, her goals are to investigate the legal cultures of indigenous peoples in colonial Peru and complete the final portion of her research on native officers’ legal involvement in the Audiencia de Charcas Jurisdiction of the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Dueñas is also leading a workshop for history and English high school teachers from Sucre, Bolivia, to use colonial judicial documents from the Archivo y Biblioteca Nacionales de Bolivia as sources for the students’ writing fictional short stories. The students will learn how to use their local archive, understand a colonial document and improve their writing skills.
