International students, beware—protect yourself from scammers

An increasing number of international students are targeted by scams. The most common scams encountered are those involving immigration, tuition, taxes, employment, travel and housing.

As the holiday season approaches, please be suspicious if anyone demands that you wire them money. Do not share your personal or financial information with unknown persons, and remember that government officials will never call you and ask you for money or threaten deportation. Scenarios on specific types of scams are outlined on the Student Legal Services website. If you fall victim to a scam, contact law enforcement by calling 614-292-2121 or 614-645-4545.
