A step toward connections

One Step ChinaDance has the power to transcend language barriers and cultural differences. Ohio State students from historically African American and Latino fraternities shared their artistic expression in China as part of a U.S. Department of State cultural exchange program.

One Step ChinaThe Ohio State University has sent students to China as part of a cultural exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. In 2015 and 2016, students of Ohio State’s traditionally African American and Latino fraternities and sororities have shared expression through step dancing with students in China, including those at Wuhan University, which has a long-standing partnership with Ohio State.

These exchange trips are organized by Bob Eckhart, American director of the Center for American Culture, a collaborative project between Ohio State and Wuhan University. The decision in 2015 to feature stepping led to a partnership with the Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male.
