Spotlight on Global Democracies: Elections in Comparative Perspectives

Interested in increasing student involvement in daily news about the elections this Fall, improving global education, and building positive attitude to other cultures/other counties?  Then this course is for you! Did you know that six other countries, beside the U.S.A., are holding elections in November 2008?

The Office of International Affairs and the Area Studies Centers at the Ohio State University invite Columbus City Schools educators to enroll in Spotlight on Global Democracies: Elections in Comparative Perspectives. The objective of this course is to provide educators with information as well as the tools to explain, explore, and compare international election processes during this time in which our own national elections are in the forefront of our daily discussions.

This course is designed to help professionals in educational explore their knowledge of current international events relevant to elections and democratic processes worldwide and their ability to keep their students involved and engaged in social political issues in a global context. Learning about other countries' election processes serves as a powerful catalyst to transform students into knowledgeable, understanding, and responsible citizens of Ohio, the nation, and the world community. Experts from the Area Studies Centers at Ohio State will present case studies from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and East Asia. These lectures will help you learn how to translate current world events into classroom materials, and how to use world events to enhance diversity within the classroom, the school, and the community.
