Visit to the Institute of Microbial Technology

Professor Abhay Satoskar, vice chair for research in the Department of Pathology, College of Medicine, along with Nikhil Tambe, director of the India Gateway and Vishwajeet Phopale, business development specialist for the India Gateway, visited the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTech) on July 1. The invitation came Govindan Rajamohan, senior principal scientist at IMTech and a former post-doctoral researcher at Ohio State by way of his connection with Wondwossen Gebreyes, executive director of Ohio State’s Global One Health initiative. The objective was to connect with institute leadership to explore opportunities of mutual interest including research and implementation science and/or training capacity.

Satoskar delivered a presentation on “Development of a live attenuated vaccine for Leishmaniasis using CRISPR Technology” that attracted significant interest from the research investigators at IMTech. Conversation with the institute director centered on learning about IMTech priorities and discussion about avenues for engagement.

Established in 1984, the IMTech is one of a chain of 38 national laboratories, six units and 39 outreach centers of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and was set up to be a forerunner in the niche domain of microbial biotechnology.
