American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Hosts Global Healthcare Summit

AAPI AwardAmerican Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) hosted its eleventh Global Healthcare Summit at the JW Marriott hotel in Kolkata from December 28 – 31, 2017. The major initiatives of the summit were engaging with healthcare professionals and West Bengal government officials in collaboration with Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare and several leading professional associations to enhance skills and exchange knowledge and best practices. The goal is to address major diseases and make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all people. 

Chandan K. Sen, professor and associate dean in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University, , served as the chairman of the AAPI Global Healthcare Summit. The summit included the CEO Forum, Women’s Leadership Forum, first responders training, Continuing Medical Education forums, research contest and a free healthcare clinic. Over 30 Indian physicians, led by Gautam Samadder, president of AAPI, and Madhu Aggarwal, chairwoman of the AAPI Charitable Foundation, attended the free one-day healthcare clinic at the suburban center and treated over 200 patients. 

Indian Americans are uniquely positioned to enrich the United States as well as India through collaborative efforts utilizing the strengths unique to each country. The healthcare forum speakers included industry leaders such as Gautam Samadder; Jayshree Mehta, Medical Council of India; Girdhar Gyani, Hospital Association of India; Sangita Reddy, joint managing director of Apollo Hospitals; Naresh Parikh, AAPI USA president-elect; Preetha Rajaraman, Health Attaché U.S. Embassy; and Jonathan Ward, Kolkata U.S. Consulate.

In collaboration with the American University of Antigua College of Medicine, AAPI organized a three day workshop training over 150 first responders including police and paramedical professionals at the KPC Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The Young Innovators Research Competition at the Calcutta Medical College helped facilitate dissemination and exchange of best practices among the upcoming young physicians of Indian origin from around the world. The winners of the Research Paper Competition were awarded with a citation and trophy at the inaugural gala the first day of the conference.
