Shum Explores Partnership with Geographic Information System Companies

Prof. Shum with Mr. Simon Musaus and Pierre de Rancourt of COWI IndiaOhio State Distinguished University Scholar and Department of Earth Sciences Professor C.K. Shum recently travelled to Mumbai and Delhi in November 2017 to discuss collaboration and research in the area of satellite monitoring, data collection and prediction with various national and multinational Geo Special and geographic information systems (GIS) companies. Shum also had key meetings with companies such as GrayRoutes Technology, Toyo Computers, Mega vision Technologies, Spa Geo Technologies, COWI and Matrix Geo Solutions.

Shum is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the International Association of Geodesy. He received numerous awards including the 2012 Vening Meinesz Medal from the European Geosciences Union. He was a lead author in 2007 Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis), Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), which contributed to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to IPCC and Al Gore, Jr. His focus on scientific research relates to the quantification of 20th century and present day global sea level rise due to various geophysical sources, including anthropogenic climate change and visited India to collaborate with GIS companies.

Shum’s engagement with various industries helped forge partnership with Indian industries and build relationships for future collaboration in the area of research. Priya Kurle, assistant director of the India Gateway, accompanied Shum on the meetings and will continue engagement with industry partners.
